Potsdam is the capital and largest city of the German federal state of Brandenburg. It directly borders the German capital, Berlin, and was a residence of the Prussian kings and the German Kaiser until 1918. Its planning embodied ideas of the Age of Enlightenment: through a careful balance of architecture and landscape, Potsdam was intended as "a picturesque, pastoral dream" which would remind its residents of their relationship with nature and reason.
Potsdam developed into a centre of science in Germany in the 19th century. Today, there are three public colleges, the University of Potsdam, and more than 30 research institutes in the city.
The Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Engineering GmbH at the University of Potsdam is Germany’s university excellence center for IT Systems Engineering. It is the only university institution in Germany offering the bachelor and master program in “IT Systems Engineering” – a practical and engineering-oriented study program in computer science, in which 470 students are presently enrolled.
HPI teaching and research focuses on the foundation and application of large-scale, highly complex and networked IT systems. The development and exploration of user-driven innovations for all areas of life is an additional field of importance.
We offer the Global Team-based Innovation program to graduate level students, who are keen on finding innovative solutions to real world challenges. In previous years we have worked with Paris e st d.school, St. Gallen University, Stanford or Aalto University as academic partners. Together with leading industry companies like Audi, Siemens, SAP or Bayer we have worked on a variety of projects including topics such as furniture, software, advertising or dental hygiene. Apart from providing a great learning experience to our students and creating high quality solutions for our corporate partners we aim at improving communication and collaboration within the SUGAR / ME310 network.
Over the past years a wide range of design challenges from various industries has been tackled successfully by students from the Hasso Plattner Institute. With Intemporel students from HPI and D.School Paris have reinvented the bathroom experience for the elderly. Through close collaboration with the corporate sponsor Lapeyre, the project result went into implementation and is available in stores in France. In another collaboration with the D.School Paris a concept for an airport in 2040 was designed for the corporate partner EADS.
